Enterostomal Therapy


Enterostomal therapy focuses on the acute and rehabilitative care of patients with abdominal stomas, draining wounds, fistulae, dermal tissue trauma, and urinary incontinence.

ET Nurses: 

  • identify patients at risk for dermal ulcers and recommend preventive measures
  • monitor skin care
  • provide staff education on procedures related to wounds, ostomy, and continence
  • provide pre- and post-operative teaching, counseling, and site selection for patients with ostomies 
  • provide post-operative skin and stoma assessment and management
  • select and provide instruction on appropriate pouching techniques
  • counsel on the dietary, sexual, and vocational needs of ostomy patients
  • assist with the development of bowel training programs for patients experiencing incontinence
  • provide patient instruction in intermittent self-catheterization
  • provide urodynamics assessment to diagnose urinary tract problems
